Cupping and TCM – A Call to Be Reasonable and Balanced

Cupping is practiced in many Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Chinese culture is, roughly speaking, 5,000 years old and many of their practices – including traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) – have been around for thousands of years. The best Chinese doctors I have visited and been treated by are very honest about the limits of TCM. Recently I visited a doctor in our city who is considered an expert in respiratory issues. He prescribed some Chinese medicine, but informed me that in my condition I may also need to take western medicine. The doctor’s approach seemed very reasonable and balanced. He is familiar with both schools of medicine.

Remarkable Things Can Happen When a Pastor and a Church Get Involved

What has made the difference? Ultimately, of course, it has been the Lord who has worked in his heart. But God used his experience in China to shift his focus and cause him to realize how important his role is as a pastor and how precious his congregation is to God and to him. Seeing the hunger people in China have for the gospel awakens us to the working of the Holy Spirit. The freshness of the people’s faith and the newness of the gospel here are powerful reminders of the gospel in our own contexts.

Musings on Personal Evangelism in China

Ever since my first trip to China in 1986 I have been involved in personal evangelism with Chinese, sharing my faith with individuals or small groups and challenging them to consider the truths of the gospel. After many years, I could almost predict from an array of possible responses how my Chinese friends would respond, especially if it was the first time they were considering the concept of God in their lives.

Divine Irony: China and the Roman Empire

There is a similarity between China and the ancient Roman Empire. The roads, the common language, and the political unity that characterized the empire all contributed to the spread of the gospel in the first few centuries of the early church. China, like the Roman Empire, has experienced a combination of similar factors that have contributed to the churches amazing growth.

How Can We Respond to China with Shrewdness and Grace?

All this points to a tremendous opportunity whereby we can get involved. We can get involved by learning about China – her culture, her people, and what makes her tick. We can pray and we can get involved, either by going to China or we supporting those who do. We can look in our own backyards for the growing population of Chinese immigrating to the US and befriend them.  They are often the most open to Christianity, fueled partly by the curiosity and discontent I mentioned above.

In any case we have an opportunity. And instead of responding in fear, we can respond with love.  Instead of responding with anger, we can respond with grace.

Suffering for Jesus and a Knight in Shining Armor

As they sat on our couch retelling the story there was joy in their eyes. “You suffered for Jesus,” I said. “Yes, and God gave me the strength,” Fu said. Hui not only saw Fu stand up to her relatives for her, she saw him stand up for Jesus.

God’s Timing Is Always Perfect

God’s timing is always perfect, but seldom according to our expectations. This is not only true with our prayers for personal needs, but also for our ministry. How long have you been praying for a family member or friend where it seems to be taking “forever”?

An Unexpected Mercy

Just last week I went in to talk to our administrative manager, Grace, and have lunch with one of the other pastors. As we prepared to have lunch, our administrative manager took me and the other pastor aside to have a word with us. “The cook just prayed to receive Christ,” she told us. “She’d like you two pastors to pray for her.”

The Spiritual Legacy of the House Church – An American Response

About five years ago I met the author of this article, “The Spiritual Legacy of the House Church” (TSLHC), but only recently did I read this piece of his. I found myself internally crying out with a hearty “amen” at the words, thoughts, and concepts he expressed. I rejoice that we can have a role in letting the non-Chinese speaking world catch a glimpse of one small, but significant, voice out of many within the house church movement in China. I feel strongly that many Christians who desire to pray for China and support her church are only able to hear the voices of those who interpret the situation in China and not those who are actually inside the church themselves. Sometimes this is due to language barriers; sometime it is due to security issues. As I sit here and write this I am keenly aware that I am in danger of doing the very same thing. This is exactly why I want my words to be in response to the author’s words.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN CHINA

With rising pressure and persecution in China, there are two challenges imperative for church leaders. The first challenge is for current leaders to love Christ above all else, and not to stray into legalism or love of the world. The second challenge is to raise up the next generation of leaders, who will humbly model Jesus even if current leaders are arrested.

WILL YOU JOIN US IN PRAYING FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT IN CHINA? PRAY FOR:

  1. Current leaders to grow in their daily walks with Christ
  2. Current leaders to shepherd and raise up new leaders
  3. New leaders who love Christ and will model him to the world
  4. New leaders to love and care for the church
