Persecution is focused on three areas: church property, church doctrine, and church polity (which includes clergy). All of this is aimed at restricting the church from exercising the basic mission entrusted to it by the King of heaven: worship, discipleship, and evangelism.
Christians are not to become enviable elites in this transitional China, which is full of deep suffering. Instead, we are to suffer with those who suffer and weep with those who weep. The resurrected Christ is the only true hope for sinners.
From the time Jesus Christ opened the door of salvation, to the time he will return to announce the end of redemptive history, every generation of Christians lives in the age of “the present time.” The present time is an age of “deep night.”…Right now, we are still in a long, deep night before the morning light dawns and completely illuminates the world.
O you who have awakened, you will see God’s grace rain down. In the wilderness and in the valley, the earth will grow green. The sheep will graze in the pastures, and all things will shout and sing for joy.
We must know we are not righteous, but wicked, before we can be justified by faith in Christ and move from the camp of the wicked to that of the righteous. Only when we read this Psalm again, in the position of those who are clothed in Christ’s righteousness, will God’s exhortation to us through David be truly meaningful.
Today is March 16, 2022. My friend, brother, and dear brother in the Lord, Elder Zhang Chunlei, was arrested a year ago today. It has been a whole year.
Today is the time the gate of grace is wide open. Today, it is still possible to wake up, repent, and be disciplined. The world has heard that Jesus is love, that Jesus laid down his life for us, that Jesus was crucified for us—but the world does not know that Jesus is king, that Jesus is Lord, and that Jesus will judge all unbelievers with righteous anger.
Why do we tremble and rejoice as we serve God? We tremble because we know we are not worthy, and that no one can come to the Father except through Christ. We rejoice because we are blessed, at at this moment we are seated with Christ in heaven.
Prepare the children in advance.
Don’t just say comforting words, but tell the children the truth: why we are persecuted, how to face the scene of persecution [i.e. how to respond if the authorities come and mistreat their parents or other adults in front of them], and how to fully rely on the Lord in the absence of their parents. Even if both parents are arrested and they are sent to an orphanage, help them to believe that the Lord’s arrangement is always good. Pray often. Pray for your parents, pray for yourself, and ask the Lord to keep watching over you.
Suffering and persecution come in ways we cannot anticipate. You think you will be able to reason with your oppressor—but what if he slaps you across the face? You think that, since you have done nothing wrong, you do not need to be afraid—but how will you react if they threaten your parents and children?
I made a pact with my wife that, if I were to be arrested and imprisoned, we would still go before the Lord together in prayer each day at 5 p.m. Once I entered the detention center, I realized this was an excellent agreement…of all the preparations I made for my imprisonment, this is the one that helped me the most.
