December 13th marks the anniversary of the Nanking Massacre. The massacre was perpetrated by Japanese forces in 1937 and lasted over six weeks. An estimated 300,000 Chinese civilians were killed, along with 40,000 Chinese soldiers. This historical event remains one of the most contentious issues between China and Japan and continues to impede reconciliation and partnership between the countries. Its anniversary can often be a time of mourning and anger in China, and frustration over Japan’s perceived reticence to ask forgiveness.

First up, we focus on Wuhan. Located in the heart of China, this metropolis is slated to be developed into a world-class city on par with New York and Tokyo. Throughout its long history, Wuhan has witnessed many tragedies from flooding to war. It was also home to many literary, artistic, and intellectual luminaries and was the site for Mao’s dramatic swim across the Yangtze River.

During the month of October, we have been celebrating the CP blog turning 1 year old by looking back over our favorite posts from the year. So far, we’ve highlighted stories and various topics that exemplify the heart of our blog. Last, but definitely not least, we focus this week on the Chinese voices the CP blog has published. Across the United States, countless churches and ministries have worked to connect international scholars and visitors with Christian hosts to celebrate Thanksgiving together. Tomorrow and throughout the weekend, families will open up their homes to welcome and love their international neighbors, including thousands of Chinese. It will be a time for cultural exchange, holiday fun, and warm fellowship. It can also often lead to open and honest conversations about Christ. Pray this week for the many families hosting internationals at their Thanksgiving meals.

Since the late 1970s, China has implemented and enforced a strict one-child policy. Created amidst fears of overpopulation, the family planning policies of the national government have long been a source of debate, criticism, and pride alternately. Without a doubt, the one-child policy has left a tremendous mark on Chinese society and values.

Last week, the government announced the shift to a two-child policy. Indications of the move had been growing in recent years as the government made tweaks and adjustments to the policy. Reaction has been mixed and many families have indicated that they continue to prefer one child despite the policy change. Whatever the implications, the policy change is a landmark move.
