Foreign Policy recently featured an article titled “Leave China, Study in America, Find Jesus: Why a growing number of Chinese students at U.S. universities are coming home with Christian beliefs.” Some of the best reporting on the topic to date, this article is an excellent look at the experiences of Chinese international students finding faith in Jesus while abroad. Whether you are new to ministry to Chinese nationals or have served for a long time, this article is a must-read.

This week we continue praying through China’s major cities with the city of Hefei. As the capitol of Anhui Province, Hefei is home to more than 7 million residents; yet, it is not a very well known city, even for Chinese. Anhui’s main industries include agriculture (rice, wheat, and tea) and heavy industry, and along with the rest of China, the area is rapidly urbanizing.

On Monday, February 8, more than 1.3 billion people will celebrate Chinese New Year. Not only will those across Mainland China celebrate, but the many Chinese living across Australia/Oceana, Africa, Europe, North America, and South America will also seek to spend the holiday with family. Whether by traveling to celebrate in person or by connecting electronically, Chinese families will seek to be reunited. What a great time to pray for God’s blessing on China and for the gospel to go forward in the year of the monkey!

Last week, Christians across China were shocked and dismayed by a TV confession made by a leading Christian layer. Zhang Kai was active in working against the government initiated cross demolitions that have been taking place over the past year. Zhang was detained in August and had not been heard from until the confession aired.

What would you like the American church to know about the Chinese church?

I think picture on the ground in China is way more complicated and complex than what we make of it. Sure there is persecution going on in China against the Christians, but there is also a lot growth and a lot of stability for Christians in China, so the picture is always very nuanced. 

China Partnership is starting a new prayer initiative to rally prayer both in China and the United States. Set your alarm to 10:02!

In a few days, China Partnership will hold its annual conference in San Diego. Hosted by Redeemer Presbyterian Church, the theme this year is “The Gospel in China: Past, Present, and Future.” The conference will celebrate the last fifteen years of CP’s work and look ahead to following God into the next fifteen. This will be a opportunity to hear Chinese pastors and leaders share their personal experiences of the gospel changing lives, renewing churches, and bringing peace into Chinese cities.

This week we continue praying through China’s major cities with the city of Guangzhou. Guangzhou has long been one of China most important cities as a center for trade and learning. The city witnessed much of Europe’s initial involvement with China, both positive and detrimental, as well as the Taiping Rebellion. Sun Yat-sen was a native of Guangzhou and his legacy can still be felt through his eponymous university. As the capitol of Guangdong, which is known throughout China as a wealthy province, the city has played a vital role in the country’s economic development.
